Donato Lovreglio (1841-1907)
Fantasia sull' opera Un Ballo in Maschera di G. Verdi (1865)

Donato Lovreglio was born in Bari but spent most of his life in Naples. He was a flautist and composed many pieces, mostly operatic fantasies, for his own instrument, but in 1865 he also published three fantasies for clarinet and one for oboe.  Those for clarinet were the well known Fantasia on La Traviata, a Fantasia on Donizetti's Maria Stuarda and the present work, a Fantasia on the Verdi opera which was first performed at the Teatro Apollo, Rome on 17 February 1859.

(Colin Bradbury and Oliver Davies's recording of the Fantasia on La Traviata is available on The Art of the Clarinettist (CC0008), and the present piece, together with the Fantasia on Donizetti's Maria Stuarda, can be heard on The Bel Canto Clarinettist (CC0014)).
